Huck Magazine: “Gay Skaters, The Last Taboo”

| October 8, 2024 | Comments (0)

England’s Huck Magazine is one of our favorite magazines over hear at Wheelbase. The reason we like ‘em so much is because they are not scared to run articles that others wont touch. They are not scared to get a bit sociological, political, or philosophical. Basically, they don’t dumb-it-down like many other mags. Over the years, Huck has featured some radical articles: one on an American expatirot, pro skater turned writer living in France (Scott Bourne Issue), a rad interview with the lengandary Mark “Gonz” Gonzales, as well as a few specifically about longboard skateboarding—and there are many others.

Their Counterculture Issue is one of our favorite issues thus far.

Anyway, Huck just put out an article featuring the topic of gay skaters in skateboarding, and after reading it, we think that it is worth sharing. As skateboarders, and as an industry, we like to consider ourselves open-minded and ideologically inclusive, but, this article reflects just how intolerant elements of our industry can be. If you have the time, definitely check this article out. We tip our hats to the Huck crew for having the balls to put this out-there and to the skaters that were willing to talk about it with them: Ed Templeton, Michael Brooke, Tim Von Wern, Bryce Knights, Davis Carnie, and Patrick O’Dell.
