Style is critical! And I’m not talking about some fashionista bullshit, nor am I speaking of any other showy display of Vanity. What I’m interested in is the particular way an individual does a thing that reflects Flow, Finesse, and Liquidity—and more specifically, how that fits into the act of skateboarding. Let’s just say that I [...]

2012 is going to be a big event-season that, for many, will require a bunch of travelling. This means dealing with long-distances, overpriced airport food, and carrying around large bags of shred equipment. That said, one of the most important things you will have to deal with is finding a place to crash while you’re [...]

Scoot, chillin' hard in Malibu. Photo: Bandy.

Scoot is a ripping downhill shredder and has been skateboarding steep and winding roads for many, many moons. He was born in Mission, BC, Canada back in 1987 and now resides in East Vancouver. Scoot has won races all over the world, including Maryhill ’07, as well as others in Germany, Puerto Rico, Canada, and France. What really makes Scoot such a Cool Cat is not only his racing accolades, but it’s also because he’s just a chill-ass human being. By day, Scoot builds houses—it just so happens that he’s also one of the fastest skateboarders in the world.

When we heard that Sector 9 was releasing Scoot’s new downhill pro model, the “Tiffany”, we had to hit him up directly and get the scoop. The following are some images of Scoot riding his new “Tiffany” board, as well as a brief interview with the man himself discussing how this new deck came about and what is on the horizon for 2012. The following is a photographic and videographic refection of an epic day spent with friends and filled to the brim with some serious downhill Gnarlitude.

Some of you may notice a lack of text in this article—If that bums you out, I do apologize.

As an experiment, I carried with me not only my skateboard, but also two DSLRs and my iPhone. I ended up capturing what I believe to be some truly inspirational shots, and ultimately, I just feel this story is best told visually—I hope you agree. Please enjoy. Read More

Notes Of A Greasy Young Man: Blowing Up Spots.

Mr. Greasy. Photo: Bandy

Blowing up spots is an ever-present issue these days—or better put: Danger. Whether you are skating rails, hairpins, driveways, or stair-sets you can see it happening all over the place. I feel like more than ever, a new, younger, and generally more eager group of skaters is beginning to emerge. Not to name names, but a city that may or may not rhyme with Baguna Leach has had many of their spots blown-out so badly that all of their hills are beginning to get banned. With some resident skaters pointing fingers (or “the finger”), the situation may not change? But that’s okay—I say ban the hills! If you‘re smart about it, it’s totally possible to skate any hill without over-exposing it; banned or otherwise.

  • It’s hard sometimes, but not offending the local residents is always a good call.
  • Don’t bring a crazy-dumb amount of people to the session, especially in a residential area—stay stealth; leave your loud friend at home.
  • I’m going to be honest here; I cut lanes—when it’s safe, and no one is looking. Ha ha! Use good judgment.
  • The least noticeable way to hit a bunch of hills is to take one run down each—bouncing from one to the other—keeps Five-o guessin’.
  • The easiest way to keep a spot off the radar is to simply not tell anyone about it.
  • Your mom taught you not to litter, so don’t!

In the end, skating is skating and a lot of people won’t be stoked right off the bat no matter how smart or respectful you are about riding. It’s important to be cool— It’s awesome to have a group of spots to skate that aren’t a bust, but it’s not worth it to be an ass to the groms. There will always be annoying beginners with bad etiquette. Ya live and ya learn, right?

Each one teach one, skate, and have fun.
