When you travel to a new place you bring along with you physical baggage, and also cultural baggage. What I mean by “cultural baggage” is all the collected preconceptions and misconceptions you’ve learned about that particular place and it’s people. When I jumped on the plane to Monterrey, Mexico a couple weeks back for the MLF, 2014 festival, not only did I carry with me a heavy load of skate and camera gear, but I also unwittingly packed a huge amount of the above-mentioned preconceptions and misconceptions.

Cuando uno viaja a un nuevo lugar lleva con uno equipaje físico y también equipaje cultural. Lo qué quiero decir con “equipaje cultural” es: todos los prejuicios e ideas falsas recogidas que has aprendido acerca de ese lugar en particular y de su gente. Cuando subí al avión un par de semanas atrás para ir al festival MLF 2014 en Monterrey, México, no sólo lo lleve conmigo una pesada carga de equipo de patinaje y cámaras, pero también sin quererlo empaqué una enorme cantidad de los mencionados prejuicios y conceptos erróneos.

In English:

I begin with the above side note about “cultural baggage” because the more I travel with my skateboard and camera the more I realize things are rarely what they seem, and much of what I think I know about places and people seldom mirror the reality of those people and places once I’ve actually experienced them myself. Mexico is a perfect case in point; I came to Mexico and the MLF event with the cultural baggage of second-hand information, but I left with priceless, first-hand experiences and a further respect and love for my Mexican brothers, their amazing homeland of Mexico, and for skateboarding in general.

Comienzo con la nota de arriba porque cuanto más viajo con mi patineta y cámara, más me doy cuenta que las cosas rara vez son lo que parecen. Mucho de lo que creo que conozco sobre lugares y personas raramente reflejan la realidad al experimentarlas yo mismo. México es un caso perfecto. Vine al evento MLF con el “equipaje cultural” de información de segunda mano, pero me fui con la invaluable experiencia personal, un mayor respeto y amor por mis hermanos mexicanos, su increíble patria así como para patinaje en general.

In English:

To say I had an awesome time in Mexico at MLF, 2014 would be a gross understatement. Northeastern Mexico is enchanted and an ideal locale for riding down hills on skateboards. I felt so minute yet inspired being surrounded by the undulating vastness of the towering Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains. As we passed below those ancient geological sentinals, from the city of Monterrey via car—then later down the winding backs of those mountains atop bending asphalt while riding on our skateboards, and ultimately spilling into a valley and the small settlement of Mesa De Las Tables—I couldn’t help but consider how lucky I was as a skateboarder and as a human being for this opportunity to experience such an amazing place with equally amazing people.

Decir que tuve un tiempo increíble en México, en la MLF 2014, sería una gran subestimación. El Noreste de México es maravilloso y un lugar ideal para patinar en sus colinas. Me sentí diminuto y a la vez inspirado siendo rodeada por la inmensidad ondulante de la imponente Sierra Madre Oriental. Cuando pasamos por debajo de esos antiguos centinelas geológicos de la ciudad de Monterrey en carro, más tarde bajando las partes posteriores sinuosas de esas montañas encima de asfalto curveado en nuestras patinetas y saliendo en última instancia a un valle al pequeño asentamiento de Mesa de las Tablas. No podía dejar de pensar en lo afortunado que era como patinador y como ser humano por esta oportunidad de conocer un lugar tan increíble con personas igualmente sorprendentes.

Homemade gorditas, Corona Familia, live music all day and night, a world-class race course, Shaman blessings, unmatched local hospitality, the sketchiest bowl I’ve ever skated, more Corona Familia, impromptu ledge sessions at night and in the middle of the street, rap battles with the homies, horseback riding, even more gorditas, chiqui chores, mescal, and still more gorditas. Yeah, all that happened, and even more!!! I wouldn’t have had it any other way!!!!

Gorditas caseras, Corona tamaño familiar, música en vivo todo el día y toda la noche, una pista de carreras de clase mundial, las bendiciones del chamán, inigualable hospitalidad local, el Skate-bowl mas chido que he patinado, más Corona familiar, sesiones nocturnas de patinaje improvisado en las banquetas y en medio de la calle, batallas de Rap con los amigos, paseos a caballo, más gorditas, chiqui-chores, mezcal y aún más gorditas. ¡Sí, todo lo que pasó y aún más!!!!! ¡¡¡¡ No lo aceptaría de ninguna otra manera!!!
